Community Action Center (CAC) was founded in 1987 by 10 area churches seeking an independent agency to respond to requests for emergency assistance from neighbors in need. Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church provided the building and operating expenses and Holy Innocents Episcopal Church provided the seed money. Today, CAC has 24 sponsoring congregations of many faiths as well as strong relationships with area schools, organizations and businesses. CAC provides assistance to individuals and families who reside in ZIP codes 30327, 30328, 30338, 30342, 30346, and 30350. By providing targeted assistance to families during a time of crisis, CAC strives to reduce the number of families and individuals who: •Become homeless •Are unable to provide for basic necessities such as utilities, food, clothing and medication
In 1988, several members of our community came together to provide sustenance and hope for 14 of their friends who were too sick to prepare their own meals. This demonstration of compassion and empathy, combined with hard work and the financial support of a caring community drove the creation and evolution of what is now Open Hand.
Today, we are the largest provider of home-delivered meals in the country. Our staff of 120, working alongside hundreds of dedicated volunteers, provides medically-appropriate meals, nutrition education, counseling and coaching services on a daily basis to 5,300 men, women and children in 17 Georgia counties who are challenged by diabetes, heart disease, cancer, HIV/AIDS and kidney disease, among others.
Open Hand operates with the same core values and guiding principles as we did in 1988-a passion for winning through trust, transparent leadership and a dedication to diversity. All decisions are guided by our purpose, our commitment to community, and a mutual respect for each individual's contribution to the fulfillment of our mission.
Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless 1035 Donnelly Avenue, SW Atlanta, GA 30310
Feeding hungry children and families, housing for the homeless, preventing homelessness through financial assistance, clothing, furniture, training, employment, and counseling to stabilize families in crisis.
Shelia used to live in the Techwood Homes Housing projects here in Atlanta and had lived there all her life. She was slightly off most of the time. It seemed as if life had passed her by and she constantly fought to get up each morning. The kindly visit from the Hosea Feed The Hungry staffer ironically also named Shelia, with food, toiletries and medical supplies, brightens her day every week though and we all know her as "mama". Several years ago,she was forcibly moved to Techwood Homes from Bankhead courts. The "rehabilitation" of the housing projects into mixed income housing displaced her yet again with a promise of return but she did not get a certificate to go back. Since then she has been moved from house to house and we are trying, with the help of the Lord to save her life. Shelia is just one of many whose lives have been displaced and by current strategic plans to tear down all the public housing projects in the city without effective re-location processes in place. Her "certificate" just gave her a license to be homeless. We have so many stories. Shelia now calls the office every day for her "Word of the Day" and we do the best we can to stop our busy work and talk to her. Unfortunately she has found out the Executive Director's extension number and sometimes five calls a day can be a bit stressful! But we all look forward to that call from Shelia everyday - our best, best supporter.
