Henry County and Union Grove highlighted National Signing Day across the county, though Luella wide receiver Detrick Bonner also shined.
One of the largest stories in Georgia when National Signing Day began was where Henry County wide receiver Markeith Ambles would sign. Tuesday night, before he was able to make it official, he declared that he would follow former Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin to Southern Cal.
At Union Grove, the Wolverines had the largest number of signees with seven on Wednesday. Defensive end Anthony Williams signed with Georgia Tech, and followed through with the commitment he gave before the season started. Linebacker Drew Bullard will follow Williams to Tech, though he will do so as a preferred walk-on.
Wide receiver Jordan Akins surprised many with his decision Wednesday by choosing Central Florida over offers from Ole Miss and Georgia. Akins was not recruited heavily before the season began, though scouts quickly noticed him as he was forced into playing both quarterback and wide receiver throughout last season.
Running back Donovan Johnson signed with Wofford, while linebacker Dareon Mays will play next fall at North Carolina A&T. Valdosta State signed two players from the Wolverines' defensive unit, as linebacker Hampton Myzell and safety John Belt will play together next fall.
Offensive tackle John Holman completed Union Grove's signing class, as he will go to Hutchinson Community College in Kansas.
Though Luella did not have the number of recruits that Union Grove did, wide receiver Detrick Bonner signed with Virginia Tech, as he also followed through with his commitment from before his senior season began. The Lions also saw mroe signees in quarterback Kyle Dickey, who signed with Tusuclum College in Greenville, Tenn., and defensive lineman Horace Clemons signed with Coffeeville Community College.
Outside of Ambles at Henry County, the Warhawks had three other commitments. Wide receiver, free safety Shavarez Smith signed with North Carolina Central, while quarterback Dylan Shaddix signed with Georgia Military College. Linebacker Darius Stroud will join Holman at Hutchinson Community College.
At Ola, left tackle Dylan Leonard signed with Columbia, as his academic record combined with his play on the field made him a strong candidate to play at the New York Ivy League school. Leonard boasts a 4.7 grade point average and a 31 ACT score. Defensive tackle Joey Carman signed with Davidson in North Carolina.
At Woodland, defensive end Alex Findura signed with Georgia State, as one of the Panthers' 24 signees on Wednesday. Dutchtown only had one signee Wednesday, as strong safety Scott Christensen signed with Bemidji State -- a Division II school in Minnesota.
