Leading into the Henry County wrestling championships, the Henry County Warhawks are a top con-tender to win county bragging rights.
In order for Henry County to beat Union Grove and the county’s other top contenders, it will need top performances out of wrestlers like junior Jake Orozco.
At the 130-pound weight class, Orozco finished 7-0 in the Class AAA Team Duals Championship, and aided Henry County in their third place finish overall. For the season, Orozco’s record stands at 49-12.
“His leverage helps him at that weight,” Henry County Coach Marty Hutsell said of the 5-foot, 9-inch star. “He’s probably one of the most conditioned wrestlers in the state, and has a motor that never stops. He’s a workaholic.
“Our practices are tough. He just trains on his own.”
Looking back at the team duals, Orozco not only won all seven of his bouts, but was able to pin his opponents in all of them.
“I think [Orozco] is one of the top three kids in Class AA,” Hutsell said. “He’s ranked in the top four. Everybody knows about him. He’s not going to sneak up on people. He’s just a hard-nosed kid that likes to win.”
Combined with his ability to pin opponents, he is able to take on the top wrestlers and even fight from behind. In a match against Troup County last season, Orozco was behind 14-0 before winning by pin, according to Hutsell.
